Chapter 23

The lab contained the blast. No one was hurt and there was minimal structural damage, but almost a year's worth of research was gone. Of course, it could all be replicated - we weren't stupid - but it would take time. Time cost money. A lot more money than clothes for thirteen people, even if most of them were teenagers. Someone was in trouble, and it wasn't us. Clothing catalogs showed up the next day.

With the catalogs arrived David's replacement. The story was that David was being transferred, which may have been true. I'm certain his sudden departure was due to his inability to control me. I had rather liked David, he had a gentle soul and a calming manner. I would miss him, especially considering his replacement. Gavin was not a gentle soul. I had shown up my superiors and now the gloves were off.

Gavin introduced himself by barging into my room at 6:00 in the morning. Normally this would have been a terminally bad idea, but Robot had gone in for maintenance. Having adapted to the normal rhythm of the HAB, I didn't often get out of bed before ten. My new handler's abrupt entry was a rude awakening, in more ways than one.

I had no idea who this strange man who had so violently entered my room was supposed to be. So, I did what anyone would do, I screamed and threw my bedside clock at his head. I tried to jump out of bed, but my foot was tangled in the sheet. As I fell to the floor, two sounds came to my ears. The invader growled "Bitch." as he wiped blood off his face at the same time that doors slammed open all up and down the hall.

As the now thoroughly infuriated man hauled me off the floor by my hair, it suddenly became very crowded in my room.

My room was situated across the hall from Jax. On either side of me were little boys. Damien on one side, and Hiram, whom everyone called Dem, on the other. This meant that, being closest, we were almost instantly surrounded by two Sisters and a Matron. Several other Guardians and more than a few wards stood back, watching.

Sissa, Damien's Matron, picked my intruder up off his feet by the back of his shirt. Jax's Sister, Dude - I know, I know - gripped his wrist to make him let go of my hair. The remaining Sister, Aerin, caught me as he let go. She steadied me and checked me over for damage, even smoothing my sleep-tangled hair where he had held me.

He dangled there, held by shirt and wrist, fuming and sputtering. Blood dripped down his face where the clock had struck him. "Make them put me down right now!" he spat.

"Why? I don't even know who you are."

"I'm Gavin, your handler."

I was genuinely confused. "David is my handler."

"David's been transferred. You've got me now."

"I see. Lucky me. And you felt the best way to announce this dramatic and sudden change was to explode into my room while I was sleeping and.
